Why the ground here calls the shots

Most clearing rigs were built for level ground. Western North Carolina does not give you level. The Asheville area sits between about 1,965 feet and 6,684 at Mount Mitchell, and the dirt is clay-rich saprolite over rock that shows the minute anyone cuts to grade.

We run tracked machines because wheels cut ruts in a wet clay bench. We mulch in place instead of hauling or burning, because that chip layer counts as erosion control and the county does not ask you to engineer it. We walk the lot instead of quoting from a photo, because rock, access, and grade set the real price and a satellite shot misses all three.

The launch set is a tracked forestry mulcher, a Ventrac slope tractor, a chainsaw felling crew, a stump grinder, a chipper, and a grapple truck. We do not grade, excavate, or build walls at launch. We clear the ground. A grading contractor cuts the pad, and the hand-off sheet says where their scope starts.

Rules by the numbers

An acre of disturbance brings a state erosion plan. Asheville's slope ordinance starts at 2,220 feet and 15 percent grade. Once a grading contractor cuts a slope to soil, they have 21 days to get cover on it. Trout streams carry a 25-foot buffer. We keep those numbers straight before the machine unloads, because a stop-work order costs more than the paperwork. We keep the guides on this site current and cite the sources.
